GMScare Case
After collecting the samples, the engineers carried out indicative analysis on site, but the result showed that ≥50um organisms exceeded D-2 limit. Three times testing showed similar result.
Engineers again confirmed with the C/E and BWMS operators that they followed the maker’s SOP strictly to operate the BWMS.
As the ship was going to leave the shipyard the next day, it urgently needed the test report to obtain the international Ballast water management certificate authorized by the Classification Society. After communication with the ship owner and the classification Society, it decided to carry out sampling and analysis again, but the second indicative analysis also showed that ≥50um exceeded the limit.
Requested by the ship owner, Engineers sampled for the third time and carry out detailed analysis on site at once, found the test results was within D2 limit, but lots of dead organisms.
Just as our research, the accuracy of indicative analysis is much lower than detailed analysis because of the working principle of indicative analysis equipments. After discussing with the maker of the indicative analysis equipment, we conclude that the just inactivated organisms be detected by the equipment as the living bodies, so the result was messed.
Hereby, we’d like to remind the ship owners that indicative analysis does cost less, but the failure risk is more than 25% higher than detailed analysis.
